Dos and Don’ts When You Get Arrested

Posted by Thurston Lopes | Sep 09, 2016 | 0 Comments

Getting arrested can be a scary thing, and thanks to television, movies, and the news, it is not getting any less scary. The important thing to know is that you have rights when you are arrested, and it is important that you protect those rights. At the Lopes Law Firm, we see a lot of clients who make mistakes when faced by pressure applied by the arresting and interrogating officers. When you get arrested, there is only 1 thing you should do.

Lawyer Up

The only words out of your mouth should be "I want a lawyer," or simpler and better, "Lawyer." You don't need to be confrontational, but you also do not need to be cooperative. When you say that you want a lawyer, you are protecting your right to remain silent and to not have what you say held against you in a court of law. Do not answer any questions. Do not say anything. Just get a lawyer.

Don't Outsmart Police

You are not as smart as the police. No one is. Do not try to outsmart them. It is a losing game. Their job is to get convictions, and they are good at it, even if you are innocent.

Don't Accept a Deal

Police can lie, and they often do. That's what going undercover is all about. Do not accept any deal without the advice of a lawyer from the Lopes Law Firm. An officer might tell you that he or she will put a good word in for you with the judge, but that doesn't mean anything.

Don't Be Intimidated

Police are intimidating. Their voices, their uniforms, and their demeanors are designed to frighten people into following the law. They may tell you that the deal is on the table only until the lawyer arrives. They may tell you that they have all the evidence against you. While they are just doing their jobs, it is important for you to protect yourself. Hiring Attorney Lopes is the best way to do that.
